Classroom Snacks and WellnessCupcakes, cookies or candy may not be sent to school for classroom parties or birthdays. It is suggested that if parents wish to send something to school on their child's birthday, a book be donated in the child's honor to the school library or classroom, or a non-food item be sent in for the class. Snacks for students must be nutritional in nature, such as fruits & vegetables, cheese sticks, nuts, whole grain bars, applesauce, raisins, or lowfat animal crackers. Wellness Policy The OUSD Student Wellness Policy focuses on nutrition and physical education. Foods and beverages sold to students through the district’s child nutrition program, student stores, vending machines and fundraisers meet or exceed state and federal nutrition standards. Nutrition education is provided as a part of the district’s health education program. Click "wellness" to learn more about healthy living! Play First, Then Eat LunchNichols is implementing a new lunch schedule which has the students go out to play first and then coming in to eat lunch. Too often we see students rush through their lunch barely eating anything, or nothing at all, because they are in a hurry to get out to the playground. By going out to play first, we hope to accomplish two things: First, we hope that the students will eat more of their lunch because they will not be anxious about getting out to the playground. The other goal is to have students return to the classroom in a calmer, less agitated state.
